As temperatures rise, so do the demands on your vehicle, especially your tyres. Luckily, PRC is here to help you look after your commercial, industrial and agricultural vehicles with expert tyre services.
Here’s how to keep your tyres in top condition during the warmer months.
Check tyre pressure regularly
Heat causes air to expand, which can lead to over-inflated tyres. Over-inflation reduces the tyre’s contact with the road, increasing the risk of uneven wear and reduced grip. Meanwhile, under-inflated tyres can overheat and are more prone to blowouts.
Make sure to check your tyre pressure at least once a month and before any long journeys. Always measure pressure when tyres are cold, and refer to your vehicle’s handbook or the sticker inside the driver’s door for the correct PSI.
Inspect tread depth and tyre condition
Summer rain can make roads slippery, which can make it difficult for worn tyres to maintain grip. The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm, but for optimal safety, aim for at least 3mm.
Use a 20p coin to check. If the outer band of the coin is visible when inserted into the tread, it’s time to replace your tyres. Also, look out for cracks, bulges or embedded objects that could compromise safety.
Rotate your tyres
Rotating your tyres every 5,000 to 8,000 miles helps to ensure even wear, extending their lifespan and improving handling. This is especially important if your vehicle is front-wheel or rear-wheel drive, as tyres on driven wheels wear faster.
Regular rotation can also help to identify alignment or suspension issues early on, preventing underperformance and accidents.
Avoid overloading your vehicle
Overloading can put excessive stress on your tyres. Check your vehicle’s maximum load capacity in the owner’s manual and avoid exceeding it. An overloaded vehicle can cause tyres to overheat, increasing the risk of a blowout.
Park in the shade when possible
Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause tyres to degrade faster, leading to cracks and weakening the rubber. Whenever possible, park your car in the shade or use a sunshade to protect your tyres and the interior of your vehicle.
Consider summer or all-season tyres
Summer tyres are designed to perform optimally in warm conditions, offering better grip and shorter braking distances on dry and wet roads. If you’re using winter tyres, consider switching to summer or all-season tyres during the warmer months for improved performance and fuel efficiency.
